Steven Belz

Steven Belz received his Masters of Fine Arts from Kansas State University. His work often includes industrial made elements incorporated into the presentation of his ceramic sculptures. His influences come from tensions created between the natural environment and man-made setting.  Belz creates unworldly organic shapes. Some of his figures may carry bright colors or muted tones but the theme is definitely ‘tension’. There is a resistance that is created where the exterior of the sculpture is trying to open up but cannot because it is being held by a rubber cord or bungee. A sense of motion or energy is created by that strain as if a flower pod or egg is opening up to give birth to a new life form. I particularly admire the simplicity of the exterior surface treatment whether it be a glaze, stain or sprigging. Seven Belz work certainly represents material hybridity by his use of stretchy rubber ties and crimped with metal.
